A Conversation for Tea

All tea is definitely NOT the same! The best tea for you really depends on your taste. Do you like floral tasting teas? Flavored? Sweet? Black, white, green, or oolong? I would recommend loose over bags usually, but if you are just trying something you might want to do bags first. The brands I like are Harney Sons and Taylors of Harrogate. Earl Grey is a blended tea flavored with bergomot (a citrus). Since it is so popular, most tea companies carry a version of it. I usually don’t like it as I find the bergomot a little overwhelming, but sometimes it’s nice. PG Tips is black tea in bags that are shaped like little pyramids. My favorite tea in pretty much any brand is Darjeeling, which has a nice mellow flavor. My current favorite Darjeeling is from Taylors of Harrogate. Fortnum Mason also has a nice tea called Queen Anne. Anyway, whi oakley outlet chever you try, enjoy! Gany

My significant other went to India and brought some Darjeeling tea back for me. It says on the can “One of the smallest tea growing areas producing the best tea in the world. Teas with exceptional aroma and bouquet.” Sounds very impressive (and I sure was impressed) but it tastes like dried grass to me. In fact I have this problem with many teas. As a kid I was in love with tea. I tried many oakley outlet times to make my own herbal teas and was always dissapointed when it turned out it tasted just like it smelled, like dry vegetation. The notable exception was mint which was minty with just a slight hint of hay. There is one tea I really like, Genmai Cha. It’s a Japanese tea. It’s sounds fancy, and I am sure it is, however what it boils down to is green tea (preferably Sencha) blended with roasted rice. It’s lovely. It tastes like roasted rice. Note, btw that when making Darjeeling or green tea the water should not be boiling when oakley outlet it hits the leaves. You either remove the water from the heat just before it boils or let it rest for a couple of minutes after it’s boiled to let it cool down.

For a readily available Earl Grey, I prefer Bigelow’s over Twinings. I live in the middle of America, so getting good tea is a challenge. However, Twinings and Bigelow’s are available almost anywhere. The reason I prefer Bigelow’s is that the special component of Earl Grey is the bergamont added as a flavoring and aromatic. Bigelow’s bags are individually sealed in a foil packet, so the tea has that delightful aroma regardless of ‘shelf time’. I drink about 5 cups a day. I’m having a cup as I write this. By the way, not to be rigid, but I think Earl Grey is enjoyed best without milk or lemon. But have it as you like it.

Jacksons, Taylors of Harrogate and Fortnum and Masons (NOT the Classic blend) are all lovely brands of E oakley outlet arl Gray. Twinings is pretty nasty, Whittards Afternoon Earl Gray is okay (but not the plain Earl Gray), Bewley’s is undrinkable, Tesco’s Finest is acceptable, Clive Mc Cabe’s is quite nice. The best Earl Gray I have ever tastest was purchased in a tea shop in Windsor about 15 years ago it was a blend known as Shen Ning or Shin Neng. Darjeeling is supposedly the ‘champagne’ of teas and it is lovely, but I personally prefer Earl Gray a good version, obviously. Of course, it’s a personal taste thing. Lapsang Souchong, Jasmine and Russian Caravan are further favourites of mine maybe try them. Always buy leaf tea and use a heated teapot, most of the recommended amounts are too much half it and let the tea draw properly before pouring. Do NOT use milk!!!! A lemon slice is not recommended either. Good luck

A Conversation for Taking up a Musical Instrument

As a trombone player of 8 years I’ve found the following tips helpful. When starting out, rent a trombone rather than buy one. Then if you give up, it’s not such a pain, and if you carry oakley outlet on, you can buy one later. During the first couple of years, stick to buying a se oakley outlet cond hand trombone. These things can be quite expensive, but a second hand student model cost me 150, as opposed to 400 or more for a brand new one! If you’re under school leaving age (in the UK), get your county music service to find you a teacher. If you are at school, you probably already know wh oakley outlet o is your local Brass teacher. Don’t splash out on mutes and other expensive equipment until you start playing in groups that don’t have the words “Beginner” or “Intermediate” in the name. Don’t buy a gig bag unless you are 100% sure you can keep it safe. A hard case is heavier, but miles stronger. Most insurance for instruments won’t cover it if it is in a gig bag, even if you insure it seperatly. I have mine insured with a specialist musical instrument insurers, and even they won’t insure it in a Gig bag.

As a trombone player of almost 8 years (I’ve been playing nearly as long as Lifson) and a former brace wearer I have to say that it is possible to play the trombone (or any brass instrument) with a brace. Admittedly, it can be a bit more difficult, and occasionally painful, but like with learning any instrument if you stick at it, it gets easier. There are also mouth guards available (a sort of miniature version of the thing that boxers wear) which, in addition to being extremely trendy and attractive, stops the brace from cutting your mouth whilst playing an instrument. There is also apparently a sort of wax that you can put on the brace for the same purpose. Another piece of advice: Even if you are planning on teaching yourself to play an instrument (such as a guitar I don’t recommend teaching yourself a brass instrument: at least learn the basics first), learn some basic maintenance of the instrument before you buy take advice from someone who knows what they’re talking about. Instruments can be expensive to buy, and if you aren’t able to clean or repair the instrument properly, they can lose t oakley outlet heir value and playability very quickly. That’s pretty much all I can think of for now. Can’t believe me and Lifson both came to the same place with the same intention, but oh well. Madmaz

A Conversation for Storing Plastic oakley outlet Bags

In the Republic of Ireland, we have virtually eliminated plastic bags, by the government introducing a 15 cent tax on every plastic bag used. Irish people do not like paying taxes, so we stopped using the things, virtually overnight. We use recyclable paper bags, reusable indestructable “green bags”, which look like cloth but are actually some sort of plastic, and cardboard boxes. You should t oakley outlet ry and introduce a similar scheme in your country, wherever you are, before the world is buried in plastic.

In belgium one of the main supermarket chains has introduced plastic boxes (like paper ones but more durable). They can be ‘purchased’ with bonuspoints you can collect when shopping. Very handy. They even adapted the shopping carts to fit them in. This pretty much eliminates the need for any bags while shopping. Australia goes t oakley outlet o the other extreme though (at lea oakley outlet st they did a few years back when I was there). There the staff of supermarkets will pack everything for you and in the process try to use as many bags as possible (I’ve had bags with only three or four items in it.). Not sure why, but they seem to like it Rod

A Conversation for SEx

I decided I needed a bit of a project to work on, so I’m planning to work out how to launch my own mini hot air balloon. All work and no play and all that My plan is to design and launch my own balloon from some remote Devon hillside in the next fortnight. My design is quite simple. I’ve inflated a balloon, covered it in paper mache, and plan to dangle from it a Styrofoam cup containing a tealight candle. The idea is that the candle will provide the hot air, and the paper mache will be light enough to be lifted by the hot air. There are some potential design flaws; flammability of the mache, weight, possibility of the candle blowing out and so on. I think it’s going to be fun to work out, though. The idea of using a tealight is that it will burn for a long time, so a well designed balloon could fly for quite a long time. The reason oakley outlet I’m posting here is that I thought it would be fun to see if anyone else had any ideas for getting a hot air balloon to fly. I know some people might be able to tell me that my plan won’t work for whatever reason, but I also hoped that maybe one or two of you might have ideas of your own. So I thought I’d challenge the good folk of SEx can you design a hot air balloon that will fly better than mine? Here’s the rules: 1. You just need to describe how you’d make your hot air balloon in a way that I’ll be able to make it here. Make it clear and easy for me. There are some designs on the Internet that involve cutting bits of tissue paper in exact shapes and connecting them in very specific ways, but I don’t have the patience for that, so keep it simple if you can. 2. I should be able to assemble your design on a kitchen table using stuff I can find around the house or in a local hardware shop, so nothing technical please. 3. Self powered balloons would be ideal one of the tests I’ll be subjecting my design to will be length of flight, so if you want me to fill it with hot air from a hairdryer you’d better make sure the heat will stay in it for a while! 4. Avoid plastic bags if you can, because I live by the sea and they tend to choke whales and turtles. Anything heavy th oakley outlet at might cause injury if it lands on someone is also out. If anyone does have a design, I’ll film the construction and flights for an Aviator film to accompany a future Post article (or if we’re especially good, for the EG) on the subject. I plan to launch any attempts of mine that may work from a field on or near Dartmoor, and I’ll do the same for any of your suggestions. Mad ideas along the lines of ‘This might not work, but.’ are especially welcome I think it will be fun to experiment. Over to you

My brother makes hot air balloons Rich. He uses tissue paper, a thin base frame made from wire, and it’s elevated using a wodge of cotton wool soaked in turps. The advantage of the tissue paper is that it’s light and if you set it off at night you can see it go for miles. Dad used to make and launch them on Bonfire Night every year and one time we watched as it came down in flames over the Stanlow Oil Refinery on the Mersey Fortunately there was nothing in the News the next morning I can ask bro for his ‘recipe’ if you’d like? Fb

Wow. some people have given t oakley outlet his a lot of thought. A quick google for “candle balloon” (I was searching for something I’ve recently read about very similar balloons being launched as a tradition, but I couldn’t remember where or why or exactly how they were made) and I find pages like this. One of the videos lists a website on how to make solar powered ones as well. No fire risk from those. The ones run on candles oakley outlet seem a bit safer. A candle flame is unlikely to survive the wind of a fall. Even in the above mentioned skylanterns video I see at least one lantern drop part of its flame and the flame keeps burning as it drops. I’d also recommend that the balloon material be something that either doesn’t burn at all or burns quickly. If it burns quickly then by the time it reaches much altitude at all, if it ignites it will burn completely before landing. Rice paper might work well.

A Conversation for Mostly Harmless MC

It sounds like some folks are getting a much later start this year than usual. I know I held off taking the 1997 Honda Nighthawk (CB750) out of the garage until May this year. The weather was so sketchy here in Mid Missouri, USA, it wasn’t worth getting unexpectedly drenched in chill rain during the first few months of the year. Typically, I could start riding at the end of February, though the mornings would require bundling up in layers or a great all weather suit. I still get caught in the occasional downpour, but I don’t mind if it’s on the way home. At least then I know I can change clothes as soon as I pull in. I tend to avoid riding to work when the forecast calls for rain in the morning (though I kick myself if it’s clear in the afternoon), because I don’t like working in ‘squishy’ clothes all day. There’s still no good place for me to dry my riding jacket if I get doused on the way in. Tumsup: You’ve given me a slight tinge of envy, riding a classic BMW R60. While doing research on the history of my Opa Oma from Deutschland, I determined my Opa must have had a BMW R12 for his ride. I suspect he later incorporated a sidecar to accommodate Oma, his sweetheart in their ‘twenties’, and shortly thereafter, his wife. If you have time, could you detail the controls and indicators on your R60; I’d like to compare a write up of the earlier model R12 ergonomics and handling. As a collector’s piece, and as a way to see the highways and byways through my grandfather’s eyes. Would you do me the favor of describing a ride on your Beemer, so I have a frame of reference. I have yet to jot down the details of my daily communte from work to to home, along the scenic Route CC and Route O, from the power plant to Fulton. It winds through the countryside, down into the Missouri River bottom, then back up through farmland, and into town. I sort of mis spoke when I said I ride, present tense. On the penultimate beautiful fall day last year I was riding through my bit of Southern Ontario about thirty miles from home when I heard a loud clunk and the left cylinder decided to retire for the season. The engine otherwise kept spinning so, rather that push it, I kept going. I can definitively say that an R60 has a top speed of almost fifty MPH on one cylinder. Since then I loo oakley outlet k at it wistfully on every nice day but I don’t now have the coin to fix it One thing that they were known for is reliability and I can vouch for that. It took me ten years and twelve thousand miles to break a forty five year old motorcycle. I don’t actually know oakley outlet how many miles mine has. The odometer has only six digits including tenths so it goes to zero after a hundred thousand. I once met a man and his wife from Guadalo. Guadalaha. Mexico who didn’t know how many miles his had and he bought it new twenty years before. He said it was six hundred thousand or seven, he wasn’t sure. He ands his wife were travelling from the southern tip of Chile to the top of Canada. The loved the trip, they’d done it before. The R60 is the last of the classic BMWs. It is the acme of a venerable technology but they had to drop it in 1970 as the Japanese had introduced a new paradigm. The only plastic that I can find is the insulation on the wiring. There’s no electronic anything in it. Magneto ignition on the end of the cam shaft and a DC generator on the crank below with an electromechanical voltage regulator six volt of course so don’t ride at night, no one can see you. I don’t know how to compare it to an R12, that’s not one I’m familiar with. It has a normal swing arm rear suspension but an earles fork in the front. I understand that this was to give extra stability when fitted with a sidecar. Mine has the lugs welded to the frame but no sidecar. The manual lists the top speed as 90MPH but that’s calculated as the red line in fourth gear. The real top is about seventy five, the engine runs out of enthusiasm after that. I don’t know what else to say. non British. The dial on top of the headlight tells you how fast you’re going, there’s a light to tell you when the high beams are on and another to tell you when you’re in neutral. There are (were) turn signals on the ends of the handlebars which seems like a good idea until the bike tips over off its stand. I like it because I can do my own work on it without special equipment. It’s simple but subtly designed, you can tell that it’s been refined over many years. If you have any more specific questions, I can try to find out for you.

Tumsup, This is what I’ve found on the R12, a bike I’m certain my Opa would have owned in the time frame before and into WWII. The biggest difference I note between the two bikes is the R60 has a “boxier” fuel tank, compared to the tapered R12 tank. I think some of the controls were different, too, because a write up I found by a person who owned a classic R12 stated many of the clutch and throttle controls were levers at the side of the tank. That would make for a well choreographed riding experience, if you ask me. I’m glad you had such a wonderful time with your R60. What other quirks in the handling (compared to modern motorcycles) did you feel as you road it. I figure you would know best, since it was a regular companion over a decade. You don’t know someone for that long without picking up on their idiosyncracies. I ask all these questions because my wife keeps pestering me to WRITE the story of my grandparents. It would serve a two fold purpose: 1) it would be a great story to share with the world; 2) some additional revenue might actually be helpful so we could buy a restored R12 of our own, as a memento of the times. OR We could take a trip to “The Old Country” to vacation in the areas where all the events transpired. Heck, if I got movie rights, we could do both. (but NOT before riding, okay?) B4ihogupthewholethreadwithnothingpertaining2thetypebikeiride

It’s getting too cold and foggy for me to continue to ride to work in the mornings. The route I take passes through farmland and a river bottom on a tributary of the Missouri. This is also the season for deer to go into “rut”, where they get practically crazy with hormones and will cross any field, stream, fence, or roadway to ‘chat up’ a prospective mate. This can be disasterous for a motorcyclist. Colliding with several hundred pounds of sinew and bone at any appreciable speed spells trouble, and possible hospital time. I’m not certain when I’ll stop taking Black Betty out for our daily ride, but it will certainly be this month. I have plans to let her stay the Winter at a Motorsports store in Jefferson City, where she’ll receive spa like treatment until next Spring. I’ve already enquired about new shoes (tires), some new bling (front halogen rear LED lights), as well as massage and strength training (engine rebuild / tuning and new gearing / chain). It’ll cost me a pretty penny, but then, it’s always “cheaper to keep’er”, isn’t it? B4ihave2partcompanyforwhatwillseementirely2longatime

I stopped riding on 7 Oct 2011. Weather, daylight (or rather, DARKNESS) during my rides to / from wor oakley outlet k, and the drop in temperature have all come to a head to dissuade me from being “out in the wind” when I ride. On the flip side: I’ve purchased a 1995 BMW K 1100 LT as a replacement bike for Black Betty. I know she’s going to be upset, as much as I’m going to be heart broken to let her go. However, I’ve been hankering for a BMW for a few years really since the time I started riding again. Something to do with my Opa in Germany, who used to work on BMW Motorrader. {see short excerpt of “Empty Cocoons” in My Space} A couple of weeks ago, my wife, A , started pushing me to look for a different bike because (in her words) “I don’t like to see you on your tip toes trying to balance your bike. It makes me scared it’ll fall over.” What am I gonna do, tell her “No, I’m not going to upgrade” to something better? Thus the in oakley outlet ternet search began. There were about a dozen contenders, though they didn’t all surface at the beginning. Once I’d seen all the offerings in the local area (MO, KS, IL), I started making contact with the sellers. One already had a buyer for a late model R 1150; another was too far south, on the Gulf Coast of TX; there was a guy who rebuffed me for ‘insulting’ him with too low an offer; and there were two close enough at hand I could easily go view them and make a decision. The one who struck me as the most sincere also cut me the best deal, effectively cutting the advertised price in half because the bike didn’t start again after he replaced a fuel pump this summer. The silver K 1100 LT is in excellent condition, though it has high mileage (120k miles). It has all the accoutrements: heated grips, auto adjust fairing, highway footboards, hard cases, a luggage rack helmet trunk. The biggest plus was the MTC Voyager pin on chassis that acts as a trike conversion for more stability (something my wife appreciates), but is easily removed within minutes by removing two bolts and driving the bike forward (something I appreciate) so I can run the twisties like I love to do. We worked out the payment and the logistics of moving the bike all yesterday. Trip to A ‘s bank to get the secured loan. Trip to “our” bank to deposit the funds, then wire them to the seller’s bank. Coordination between the seller, the logistics (transport) company, and the BMW dealership in STL (where the initial check up repairs will take place). Seller promised to separate bike and trike chassis for Transporters, who promised to store chassis and deliver bike to Dealership, who promised to repair efficaciously so I can drive bike to Transporters and reattached trike chassis, then drive home with whole bike / trike combo. A and I celebrated achievement at local pub (Bek’s) with shared meal and good cuppa java. I should have everything home in about two weeks. I’ll believe the weather holds long enough for it to be a pleasant ride. We’ve discussed going to fetch it as a family; I’ll drive the trike combo, A will drive her BMW 528i to get us there and her back; our daughter, Y , could tag along and ride pillion back with me. Looking forward to riding more frequently with all family members next year. Perhaps we’ll even do some road trips with the Gateway BMW Motorcycle Club that I’m linking up with in STL.

A Conversation for IMAX Theatres

Well. I just went to the new Famous Players IMAX theatre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and while talking to the staff discovered an interesting fact. Despite sold out shows all day every day, the staff pick up VERY little garbage one employee claimed he p oakley outlet icked up a grand total of 2 soft drink cups and one popcorn bag all week. Surprisingly, nearly ALL the viewers, when asked to remove their own rubbish, did so. We really are very polite. Thank You.

Our local IMAX in Speyer has two houses a “Classic” and a “Dome”. I have only been to the Classic once (the first time back in the days when it was the only one there) At each showing there was a maximum of 20 people in the cinema, so I doubt they could produce that much rubbish. Are the films the same all over the world? Ours is showing one on Egypt, one on the Titanic, one on Safari in Africa, one in Outer Space etc etc. In fact the Entry doesn’t mention the content of the films at all. Typical! All they can talk about is the technical side of it. Never mind what it’s actually FOR. There should be at least a sentence stating that it is devoted to showing documentary films about such things as Outer Space or under water where you have completely different dimensions to think in as opposed to the normal feature film which tells a story usually within a limited space, such as a room or on a street, in keeping with the centuries old theatrical tradition. Of course there are films made at sea or Westerns which take place with miles of desert stretching in all directions, and this is one of the advantages of cinema (the conventional kind) over the theatre. But the desert/sea/city skyline is still basically only a backdrop to the actors and not the subject of the film itself.

I just saw T Rex (a sterilized and popularized film which states, in essence, “Look! Dinosaurs are friendly and happy so girls can like them too!”), and a special Cirque du Solier made specifically for IMAX 3D oakley outlet . Very cool. IMAX is moving towards fiction and regular films and away from the documentary style films because of the simple fact that documentaries don’t draw in the crowds. Its a shame, really. But I have to admit that I would rather see something like “The Mummy Returns” designed for IMAX 3D than yet another canyon, or a forest, or more boring old outer space.

We’ve just seen one in France about some Inuit Ca oakley outlet nadians at one of these cinemas, but it was called Cinema 180. Is this the same thing? I oakley outlet t had all the seats tilted backwards. And if it is, is it the same as the cinemas where you stand up at a bar at the front and watch films about rollercoasters? I always had to hold onto the bar or I’d fall over. I was quite upset to have to sit down in this one. And I find sitting right at the front is best, but every one I have ever been to all the other people go straight to the back.

No, Cinema 180 isn’t the same thing. In fact, this sounds like fusion of two other technologies and I’m not sure which is which: Dimension 150 was a 70mm process created in the late 60s or early 70s and was used to shoot “Patton”. Cinema 360 was pioneered at an Expo somewhere, I believe it was used by Disney at one time. This is the idea: a ring of projectors and screens surround the audience in a broken circle (leaving room for the projectors) to create (as nearly as possible) the experience of actually ‘being there’ wherever the camera is. My reference book “Wide Screen Movies” lists a Cinema 160, which was devised by Frank Caldwell and called, in sequence, Super VistaVision, (in 1955) Cyclotrona, and finally Cinema 160 in 1958. There were no features made in this format.
