32nd Twin Cities Marathon coming Sunday

About 2 1/2 years ago, Florida runner Greg Goebel essentially dropped dead while running an indoor marathon in the middle of winter in Northfield, Minn.

Thanks to lifesaving CPR and an implantable defibrillator, Goebel is back in Minnesota, about to run another marathon. Goebel was a veteran of nearly 50 marathons when he was running the Zoom! Yah! Yah! Indoor Marathon on the indoor track at St. Olaf College in January 2011. At about the halfway point, he started to feel faint and collapsed. He woke up 4 1/2 days later in a Minneapolis hospital.

Goebel had a sudden cardiac arrest, but a doctor who was running the Zoom! Yah! Yah! and a nurse who was a spectator performed CPR.

Since then, Goebel received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator and has run another 22 marathons with the device. He was named to the Medtronic Global Hero program and runs with a shirt that says, “Another runner saved my life with CPR. Learn it.”

Two sudden cardiac deaths have occurred in the 31 year history of the Twin Cities Marathon.

But according to a study by University of Minnesota researchers, if a runner has a cardiac arrest during a marathon, there’s a 50 50 ch oakley sale ance of successful resuscitation, compared with a 5 percent chance of survival for a person who collapses on the street in an everyday situation.

There will be two changes in this year’s race route. First, the start of the race will be at Sixth Street and Portland Avenue, near Hennepin County Medical Center, about two blocks west of the Metrodome. And, the marathon route will follow the edge of the west lagoon of Lake Nokomis rather than shoot directly across the lake via Cedar Avenue.

In addition to the usual road closings along the marathon course, the Franklin Avenue bridge crossing the Mississippi River in Minneapolis will be closed to motor vehicle traffic during the race.

The bridge, previously open to vehicular traffic for the event, will be closed because of new weight restrictions. Motorists and race fans are advised to cross the Mississippi in that area using either the Lake Street bridge or the Interstate 94 bridge. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Aurora Avenue, and 12th Street from Wabasha Street to John Ireland Boulevard.

Spectators might want to pack a raincoat Sunday as there’s a 50 percent chance of showers with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 52 forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

The marathon has placed new restrictions on bags and backpacks in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing April 15.

Race organizers are advising the public that any bags carried close to the course or start and finish are oakley sale as will be subject to a search. Signs also will be posted warning against leaving bags unattended at the event.

Race organizers will issue clear plastic bags to runners to carry warm up clothing and other items. The race prohibits personal bags or backpacks to be carried into the start area or transported from the start to the finish area.

The New York City and Marine Corps marathons have announced prohibitions on runners using CamelBak style hydration packs for security reasons this fall.

The Twin Cities Marathon is discouraging, but not banning, the backpack style water bladder carriers. There will be security at each starting corral entrance, and runners with hydration packs wi oakley sale ll need to have them inspected before entry, according to the marathon.

Marathon bibs this week were being offered for sale online at Craigslist for up to $100. Normal registration fees for the sold out event range from $105 to $125. Marathon organizers say that for safety and scoring reasons, they prohibit the selling or trading of race bibs. Anyone involved in selling or buy oakley sale ing race bibs may be banned from participating in future races, according to race organizers.
